What is a PGN?
PGN stands for Portable Game Notation. It is a way of saving your chess game so that it can easily be read by computer programs and websites.
How do I create a PGN?
This can be done either on a chess website or with a chess program. Most chess programs will have an ‘export PGN’ function once you have entered a game.
How do I enter a game on lichess.org?
* Open the website lichess.org at https://lichess.org/
* Hover your mouse over the top bar ‘Tools’.
* Click on ‘Analysis’.
This should open a window with the starting position:
Now enter your game on the chessboard. You should see below the board that the website is generating the PGN (with notation) for you, for example:
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5 6. Ndb5 d6 7. Bg5 a6 8. Na3 b5 9. Nd5 Be7 10. Bxf6 Bxf6
and this notation can then be sent in for analysis. You can also add variations:
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5 6. Ndb5 d6 7. Bg5 a6 8. Na3 b5 9. Nd5 Be7 10. Nxf6+ (10. Nxe7 Nxe7) 10… Bxf6
How do I enter a game on chess.com?
* Open the website chess.com at https://chess.com/
* Hover your mouse over the left-hand bar, over ‘Learn’. Click on ‘Analysis’.
* Enter your game on the chessboard. By right-clicking on the moves you can add extra comments and annotation symbols (such as ? or !).
* Above the list of moves you can optionally add extra game information — for example the names and ratings of both players.
* Click the button in the bottom right corner, labelled “Share”.
* Click the Download button in the middle of the window that opens.
* You should now have a PGN of your game!
