Verslag ronde 1

KNSB – Klasse 4I – Round 1, Eindhoven 3 vs Kempen Combinatie 1

As Eindhoven 3, we kicked off with a tough loss, finishing 1½ – 6½. While the result wasn’t in our favor, it’s not all doom and gloom—our opponents had a higher average rating (1969 vs. our 1903). We’re already looking ahead, and come back stronger in the next games!

Board 1:
Zon van, P.A.C. (Paul) 0.5 – 0.5 Put van de, J.W.P. (Jeroen)
Both players made inaccuracies in the opening, which led to an original position early in the game. In the middlegame, the bishop pair of black became active. Jeroen could play for a win by opening the position in the centre. He won a pawn, but overestimated the chances of the resulting rook endgame with 34…Kg6?

Board 2:
Schalij, F.D. (Frits) 0 – 1 Coronel, J. (Joshua)
Frits played a less common opening, but it turned out that his opponent was better prepared for this opening than him. They entered a complex middlegame that after a though fight resulted in an endgame with an extra pawn for Frits’ opponent. Stockfish revealed that they both had missed some good tactical shots to get a big advantage. In the endgame black showed his competence and left Frits without any chance.

Board 3:
Weijers, R.G.J. (Ralf) 1 – 0 Anema, W.J. (Walter)
In the opening, black got an advantage for the expense of a pawn. White had a lot of trouble to develop his pieces. However, Walter spent too much time finding the best moves and after 25 moves he was low on time. Walter could have decided the game with a piece sacrifice: Ne3+. However, the game got too tactical! After some exchanges, the problems for white were over and he won easily by promoting the a-pawn.

Board 4:
Çayönlü, A. (Arda) 1 – 0 Schobben, M. (Morris)
Only win for ESV3. Hard-fought game!

Board 5:
Wolferink, F. (Frans) 1 – 0 Coenen, A.P. (Albert)
Albert played with black against an opponent who was much stronger then him. Frans was the strongest player of Kempen Combinatie 1. After 4 moves Albert made a very serious mistake. He should have exchanged a pawn, but instead played 4……Nc6?. Frans sacrificed a pawn on e6 and Albert couldn’t take back with his bishop, because he would have lost a piece. Having no other choice, Albert opted take back with the f-pawn and weakened his king’s position. Frans opened up the black king with his h-pawn. In a lost position, Albert tried to get some compensation by creating a pin with a rook on a bishop (black: Rh1, white: Bc1 Ra1) but this plan backfired. With a discovered attack from the pinned bishop, Frans won Albert’s pinning rook. Hence, game was lost and Albert resigned. Though game but better luck next time!

Board 6:
Rey van, L. (Loek) 0 – 1 Hellemont van, T. (Tim)

Board 7:
Rietra, P.T.J.M. (Peter) 1 – 0 Schellingerhout, N. (Nico)
Nico spent a lot of time in the opening, which did not help finding his way in the middle game. He overplayed his position, lost a few pawns. Peter simplified into a rook endgame with two pawns up. At that point, only thing to do for Nico was accepting the inevitable…

Board 8:
Jager, T. (Thomas) 0 – 1 Boomen van den, R.N.A. (Ronny)
Summary by Thomas: Ik speelde met wit tegen Ronny van den Boomen.
