For young chess players, our chess club, the Eindhoven chess club (Eindhovense Schaakvereniging) has a youth department. The youth department is for players of all levels, from beginners to top players, for children as well as junior players. We are very proud that in recent years our children and juniors have collected a large number of national championships. Of course there are plenty starting chess players that get our attention as well.
Our youth section meets on Monday evening from 18:45 to 20:00. These evenings consist of two parts: from 18:45 to 19:30 we offer chess lessons and from 19:30 onwards the games begin. Every player is paired against an opponent of approximately the same playing strength. If a game has finished quickly, the children can play another game. Around 20:00 most games will have ended (if a game takes too long, we will add a chess clock). The results and standings of the competition are published on the web site.
For the lessons the players are divided into small groups. Lessons are given according to the well-known Step method, which originated in the Netherlands but has since spread to other countries as well. In the higher groups a game played by the players themselves in the competition is often discussed. We are very pleased that the youth department can use the International School Eindhoven. The ISE facilities provide a great teaching environment. Our primary teaching language is Dutch. However, since our teachers are bilingual, mixed language lessons are possible as well.
Chess players learn a lot when they participate in tournaments. Especially for beginning chess players, the so-called Eindhoven Cup is fun to participate in. This tournament is held seven times per year. There are numerous other tournaments at all levels as well. We try to inform the youth and junior members as much as possible about these possibilities. Besides individual tournaments we also try to join as a club team in youth team matches. Many children like to play together in a team.
If you want to become a member, you can contact Nico Schellingerhout.
Our club has seen tremendous growth in recent years and we do everything we can accommodate as many chess enthusiasts as possible. Unfortunately, we have had to instill a waiting list for new admissions. Please contact Nico Schellingerhout to be enrolled on the waiting list. In your mail please mention the name, date of birth and the approximate chess experience level of your child(ren).
Once a spot opens up, you will be invited to join us for 3 free lessons, after which you can enroll your child in the club through the registration form.
